The European Commission announced call for the pillar Societal Challenges under the program Horizon 2020. The call is announced within the priority Societal Challenges 6 (SC6) to understanding within Europe and promotion of European and cultural space. Projects of this call are divided into three types: Research and Innovation Action; Coordination and Support Action and the linking of national and regional research programs, the ERA-NET COFUND. The current SC6 Work Programme 2016-2017 tackles four major challenges currently faced by the European Union:
- Economic recovery
- Reversing inequalities in Europe
- The global environment
- A better understanding of Europe's cultural and social diversity
