On November 26, 2015, the ERC has released the initial facts and figures regarding applications for ERC 2016 Starting Grants.
The competition for ERC 2016 Starting Grants closed for applications on 17 November 2015. Number of applicants levelled out: a slight increase (+0.5%) from the previous Starting Grant call was recorded and the ERC received 2935 applications. The largest number of applications was submitted in the domain of Physical Sciences and Engineering, followed by Life Sciences and Social Science and Humanities. There were more female applicants - an increase from 34.5% to 36% and more applicants from Central and Eastern Europe – a 9.3% increase.
ERC Starting Grants are for researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD and scientific track record showing great promise. Funding per grant is up to €1.5 million and project duration up to 5 years. Calls for proposals are published once a year. The ERC Work Programme has earmarked €485 million for an estimated 335 Starting Grants in 2016. The ERC is now starting screening and evaluation of proposals. The selected projects will be announced in the second half of 2016.
