On 18 July 2016, the members of the international evaluation Meta-Panel met to evaluate the level of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Prof. Marja Makarow from Finland is the chairwoman of the panel and the panel includes five other foreign evaluators. People form management and committees of SAS are members of the evaluation committee also.
Evaluation of individual panels will result in the formulation of recommendations for SAS to form the characteristics of Slovak science, its fundamental research and development for the progressive development of Slovak society. The ambition is also to strengthen the position of SAS in the European Research Area. Chairman of the SAS prof. Pavol Šajgalík said that the results of the assessment will not be the basis for restrictive measures at the academy, but they allow a negotiation with government structures to receive extra funding for research of the best scientists.
Currently, a phase of data collection begins and evaluator´s visitations in the institutes of SAS will be followed in October-November 2016. A final report of the Meta-Panel will be released in January 2017.
