A new work program for the Horizon 2020 was approved for the period 2016-2017. It is a flexible working program covering almost 600 topics. The budget for these two years is 16 billion euros. The European Union will support the modernization agenda for many sectors, the development of the Internet of Things, circulation management and sustainable economy.

Support of science will follow the European Commission's efforts in employment, growth in investment, a digital single market, energy policy and climate change. Relevant issues such as security of the EU external borders, the fight against crime and terrorism, or research on migration flows will be supported also.
