On June 21, 2016, a symposium of PhD student in biology was held in Ivanka pri Dunaji. The event was organized by the Institute of Animal Biochemistry and Genetics of SAS. The aim of the symposium was to provide a space for presentation of experimental results of PhD students in the form of short lectures and to defend it before a committee. The event was attended by 20 PhD students from several departments of Slovak Academy of Sciences and Slovak universities.
Mr. Patrik Krumpolec, from the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology of SAS, won in the section Physiology a general biology. His work was entitled: Regular exercise as a supportive medicine for Parkinson`s disease.
Under the section Microbiology and cell biology, Mrs. Nina Kunová (Institute of Molecular Biology of SAS) won with the topic The role of Lon-mediated proteolysis in the dynamics of mitochondrial nucleic acid-protein complexes.
Two prizes were awarded in the section Biochemistry and molecular biology. Mrs. Elena Pánisová from the Institute of Virology of SAS obtained the first price for the study Carbonic anhydrase IX stimulates oxidative metabolism of glutamine and pyruvate in the tumor cells. Mr. Ján Frankovský (Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University) got the second award for his study YGR52w as a candidate of mitochondrial protein kinase of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
In the long term point of view, the Slovak biologists reach excellent scientific results that are comparable to world standards and therefore, it is necessary to maintain a continuum of support for their research.
